Description

I have a daily schedule for those over 2, including breakfast, circle time, preschool curriculum teaching, outside play, lunch, napping/rest time, and afternoon snack. Interspersed with these activities are hygiene emphasis, potty breaks, & free play.

Teaching Philosophy:
For infants, I use an infant curriculum in our daily activities for fun and interaction. Every two weeks we focus on a different lesson plan appropriate to the age of your infant, and include music and movement, language, and much more.

For toddlers and preschoolers, I provide a preschool curriculum during the school year (running from September through May). Each month focuses on a theme, and we incorporate the ABC's, numbers, shapes, colors, community helpers, and other fun activities. I also have a literacy program where we focus one day each week on a special book and conduct activities around that book.

Visit my website for a detailed explanation of my day care and child care program: www.freshairdaycare.com

As part of my curriculum we have a daily “circle time” (for older toddlers though all babies attend as well!) where we discuss something relating to the days of the week, and the weather for the day. It is a time for coming together, getting calm, and learning to focus energy and attention. Sing songs, do fingerplays, and get energized for the day.

Your infant/toddler or preschooler will bring home projects throughout the month so that your family can share in his or her learning experiences. You will soon begin to see the many new things your child has learned and accomplished with our program.

Approach to Discipline:
Our method of teaching children self-discipline is to use praise, positive reinforcement and re-direction. When children receive positive, non-violent, and understanding interactions from adults and others, they develop good self concepts, problem-solving abilities, and self-discipline. Based on this belief of how children learn and develop values, there is never physical punishment or threat of physical punishment at my daycare. Children will be treated with courtesy, respect, and patience. Only constructive, age-appropriate methods of discipline will be used to help children develop self-control and assume responsibility for their own actions. Praise and encouragement of good behavior will be used instead of focusing only upon unacceptable behavior.

I try to stress two main patterns of behavior: respect for other people, and respect for property. I do not allow children to hit or shove other children or verbally abuse them. I also stress that they treat material possessions mine or theirs) with respect. There is a difference between playing hard, and using a toy for a purpose for which it was not intended. For example, books are for looking at, not tearing pages out of.

We Do:
1. Praise, reward, and encourage the children.
2. Reason with and set limits for the children.
3. Model appropriate behavior for the children.
4. Modify the classroom environment to attempt to prevent problems before they occur.
5. Listen to the children.
6. Provide alternatives for inappropriate behavior to the children.
7. Provide the children with natural and logical consequences of their behaviors.
8. Treat the children as people and respect their needs, desires and feelings.
9. Ignore minor misbehaviors.
10. Explain things to children on their levels.
11. Use short supervised periods of time-out.
12. Stay consistent.

Toilet Training Approach:
I accept children ages 6 weeks and up. Toilet training usually begins at 24 months or after, and I will work with you on toilet training for your child when the timing is appropriate for your child.

When you feel your child is ready for potty training (toilet teaching), I ask that you begin this teaching at home. I will follow through and assist you in toilet training your child with the understanding that it will be successful only if we work together, and I will encourage your child while in my care. Please keep in mind that the activity level at my daycare can distract your child from responding to an urge to use the potty, more so than at your home. Therefore, I will continue to use diapers or pull-ups until your child can and will announce that (s)he must use the bathroom (not just at home, but here, also) and can control his/her bladder and bowels for a few minutes beyond that announcement.

Potty trained means that children are dry/accident free during waking hours in underwear for 2 weeks straight at my house. (Nap time wetness is not related to potty training as sleep training is biological, not learned).

There is no age on potty training. “Training" can begin as soon as the child can confidently walk and do so in a natural progressive manner, but parental home involvement is needed for potty training to be successful and parents and provider must agree on when to begin. In addition, the routine for toilet training shall be discussed with parent(s) so the same method will be used here and at the child’s home. Our mutual goal is to have less diapers and more self-sufficient children.
Admission conditions
My hours are flexible and dependent on parent's child care needs. I am available for both day and night care.
